Dr. Shenk is a Professor of English at the University of New Orleans whose book, America's Black Sea Fleet: The U.S. Navy During War and Revolution, 1919-1923, was published by the Naval Institute Press in November, 2012. Besides his work as an English professor, Prof. Shenk is also a retired captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve who once taught at the U.S. Naval Academy. He has published widely about naval matters. Shenk originally became interested in what the U.S. Navy was doing in Turkish waters upon reading Marjorie Dobkin's book, Smyrna, 1922 and later visiting with her in New York. The fruit of a decade of research, Shenk's book won an international prize for naval history. A long chapter on Smyrna (the crisis of his book) provides a graphic account of key decisions by naval and civilian personnel--both good and bad--during the great Smyrna tragedy.
