AHI Foundation Study Abroad Student’s Account Published by The National Herald

All Eight Student Essays Published on TNH’s Website

WASHINGTON, DC — Niko Piperis, a junior at Boston College, and participant on the 2015 AHI Foundation Study Abroad program, has his experience published recently on the op-ed page of The National Herald, a leading Greek American weekly newspaper, Dec. 19-25, 2015 edition.

Piperis’ piece, “As We Ponder Solutions to ‘A Simple Twist of Fate’” recounts his time on the trip in Cyprus, and specifically, the student group’s visit to Turkish-occupied Cyprus.  He grapples with calls by many to move on from the past thus tolerating injustice for the sake of compromise.  He writes, “But what [U.S. Ambassador] Koenig and far too many nations in the West fail to realize is that the fundamental nature of the Cyprus issue is justice; and by neglecting justice, we jeopardize both United States interests and the legitimacy of international law in the region.”

In addition to Piperis’ piece being published in the newspaper, all of the eight student accounts will be published on The National Herald’s website, www.thenationalherald.com.

“We are thrilled that Niko was able to share his experiences in a prominent Greek American newspaper,” AHI President Nick Larigakis said.  “We thank The National Herald for taking an interest in his commentary as well as all of our students’ essays by placing them on the newspaper’s website.  We look forward to providing additional students with the same memorable and educational experiences that Niko and his peers encountered on future trips.”

At Boston College, Piperis, a native of Omaha, Neb., is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Philosophy.

The American Hellenic Institute is an independent non-profit Greek American public policy center that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
